As most of you know, on Sunday May 21st, V’s Cupcakes was lost in a fire that destroyed 4 businesses. Thankfully, no one was injured. Since then, I have been working feverishly towards opening a new location, keeping my staff employed, and keeping my dream alive. This has also given me some much-needed down time to heal and reflect on the past, as well as the way forward.
As those who are close to me know, I would always put on a brave face for my customers, even though my body may have been racked with pain at the time. My health was slowly failing, due to my Lyme-induced heart condition. My family watched me on the slow road to heart failure, helping where they could but knowing that the path I was following was likely impacting my long-term health. My absence was felt by them, so they bravely came in every Saturday morning to help make boxes and do a million other things before opening. They’ve been amazing.
As we were underinsured, we reached out to the community for help. But in the end, we knew that if we were to open again we would do so saddled with a massive debt that I would again have to work sixteen-hour days to pay off. With the improvement in my health that I have seen since the fire, I can no longer ignore what my business was doing to me and must come to terms with what is truly important in life.
Although it hurts me to type these words, I have decided not to re-open V’s Cupcakes.
This has been the most difficult decision I’ve ever made. I know many of you have been patiently waiting through the delays to once again savour our treats. Although I know I’m letting you all down, in the end I must now do what is best for V – something I’m not accustomed to.
I want to thank you all – the community, our staff, our loyal customers and friends – for supporting V’s Cupcakes over the past 3 years. You made my dream a reality and have given me so many fond memories and new friendships. I feel so honoured to have been a part of your special celebrations and to provide our nut-free treats for your families.
I also want to thank those of you who graciously donated towards reopening V’s Cupcakes. All the funds that were raised will now go directly to Lyme Ontario and to Lyme Disease sufferers.
V’s Cupcakes has been a challenging, gratifying and sweet journey. I am looking forward to seeing where life will take me next. Stay tuned!
From my heart to yours,
